Description
Basbousa is a sweet, dense semolina cake soaked in syrup. It’s a popular dessert in the Middle East and North Africa.
Ingredients

- 2 cups semolina
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups sugar (for syrup)
- 1 cup water (for syrup)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (for syrup)
- 1 tsp rose water (for syrup)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Mix semolina, sugar, yogurt, melted butter, baking powder, coconut, and vanilla in a bowl.
- Spread the batter in a greased baking dish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden.
- While baking, make the syrup by boiling sugar, water, lemon juice, and rose water for 10 minutes.
- Pour the hot syrup over the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven.
- Let it cool before cutting into squares.
Notes
- Let the cake absorb the syrup fully before serving.
- You can add almonds or pistachios on top for decoration.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container.
